Done? Good. Now, it’s time to talk about flooring hazards. Though we don’t mean to scare you, your flooring, be it engineered hardwood flooring or laminate, is at risk day in and day out of being damaged, sometimes beyond repair. Though there are plenty of type-specific threats you’ll need to watch out for when it comes to flooring dangers, there’s plenty of overlap—an overlap we’ll cover below.

Discover the Top Three Things That are Out to Ruin Your Flooring

Though the compositions (and the strengths and weaknesses) of every flooring type varies, there’s one thing that’s universally illy-tolerated: excessive friction. This intolerance has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of your flooring. Any material will break down if enough force is applied to it over a long enough length of time; for example, slow-moving rivers can hew canyons out of solid stone. Regardless of where you bought your flooring from, what kind it is, or what kind of maintenance procedures you enforce, keep an eye out for the following:

  • Untrimmed dog nails | We all love our dogs, but their untrimmed nails can easily leave marks in your flooring, especially if you own an active, large, or heavy breed. File or trim your puppy's nails regularly to avoid unfortunate damages.
  • Shod feet |There are reasons beyond cleanliness that you should consider enforcing a “no shoes in the house” rule! Depending on the season, you and your family could track anything from mud to grit to de-icing salt from roads and driveways. Different flooring types have different tolerances to these various compounds, but none of them appreciate fine particles repeatedly being ground into them. Keep your shoes off indoors, though, and you’ll be golden.
  • Heavy items being dragged | This includes everything from household furniture to your kid’s sporting equipment. Anything in the wrong place at the wrong time can cause a scrape. Of course, while flooring is meant to be walked on, there’s no harm in taking extra precautions.
