Carpet is a top choice for flooring across the world, perhaps for good reason. Just like hardwood flooring, it can be made from many different materials and thus have many different price points. It’s soft and comfortable underfoot and can make a room feel cozier.

But carpet certainly isn’t a miracle flooring! We’d be remiss if we, as a seller of everything from waterproof flooring to engineered hardwood flooring, said that anything was. Just like any other flooring, carpet has its weaknesses too, though these weaknesses remain poorly discussed, as it’s often seen as the “default” flooring option for pretty much every space except the kitchen, dining room, and bathroom.

You deserve to be informed about carpet’s shortcomings, as you deserve to make an informed decision about what you’re putting down in your home, and we at E Hardwoods & Flooring are here to discuss those shortcomings. We don’t sell carpeting, as popular as it is, for as good a reason as its prevalence: sometimes it just isn’t practical.

Why Carpet Sometimes Can’t Compare

Carpet is fussy. While there are blogs everywhere discussing how “maintenance-intensive” solid hardwood flooring is, it can’t hold a candle to the demandingness of carpet.

Carpeting requires constant cleaning, as it’s a reservoir for dirt, grime, and even mold. You better have a good vacuum on hand, as well as hours to push it around. Indeed, practicality sure isn’t carpet’s strong suit in any sense of the term.

Need more reasons to choose hardwood over carpet?

  • Carpet stains incredibly easily. While there are certain types of carpet advertised as “stain-resistant,” a good vinyl flooring always beats carpet out in that respect hands down. Even if the material of the carpet itself doesn’t take on stains easily, the fact that it’s made out of many fibers instead of a singular smooth surface means that getting spots out of it is all the harder.
  • You can’t just replace parts of your carpet. With engineered hardwood flooring and similar types, a busted board can simply be replaced on its own. If any part of your carpet were ever to need that sort of treatment, you’d need to replace the entire room, which is both an expensive and wasteful process.
  • Carpet’s installation nearly always requires a professional. Floorings like luxury vinyl plank are easy for the layperson to put down. Carpet must be cut to perfection the first time, from the padding to the material itself, hence why professional help is pretty much a requirement. And that professional help? You’ll often be overcharged for it.
